Last Journey for 2008 - Season of Change

Season of change is all around us. There is no question this has been an exciting year in so many ways. From a men's ministry perspective we've seen God move in the lives of many.

JeffThis Monday (Nov. 10th, 7:00 pm) is our final Journey for 2008. Our very own Jeff Walton will speak to us about the seasons of life. Jeff is a gifted teacher but most important he demonstrates his faith in every aspect of his life.

Please join us as we take 90 minutes to connect, reflect and focus on all that is before us. It is an exciting time with so many opportunities to further God's kingdom. It is the sum of the whole which positions us to strongly move forward.

This time is for you. No preparation needed. An opportunity for us to band together as men committed to being all who God created us to be. Your very presence will no doubt speak strongly into the life of another.

Looking forward to Monday at Grace Church - 7 p.m.

Christmas in October

We have a unique opportunity available to us this fall to minister to the Community of the Good Shepherd (CGS) which offers a wide variety of support services for people with developmental disabilities.  They work to empower and enable them to reach their greatest potential.

CGS runs and maintains five group homes for their clients.  Each home is approximately 3,000 square feet and we (Grace Church) will be painting the inside of each home.  All work will be completed in one day on one weekend in November.

As we rally around this opportunity we are looking for house captains and volunteers.  If you would like to use your time, effort and/or gifts to minister to this organization that provides much needed services please let us know?

Once an Arafat Man

The-Book Our Worship Pastor's father has released a book about his life.  Many of you are familar with Tass Saada's story.  It is a remarkable journey about his life as a refugee, to PLO sniper to Christ follower.

Be praying for Tass as no doubt this book is opposed.  Be praying for him and his family.  Be praying that this book will open further doors to tell the incredible story about the freedom found in a walk with God.

Recap of Monday Night

I guess you would expect for us to say it was a great night but it really was a special night.  Jeff spoke to the mission available to us all.  He opened up the evening with the topic of confidence.  Addressing the battle we have with it and the pursuit we find ourselves in to find it.  So much of our life is focused around answering the question do we have what it takes...that is a question God desires to answer for and with us.  "Biblical knowledge is what equips us to deal with insecurities", stated Jeff as he spoke about how we find peace in this area.  What a great tie in to our upcoming study.

This Saturday we start our 4 week series...Man of God and the Word of God (see spotlight above). No question this will be a defining time for us.  The initial response has been outstanding.  You can register online today.  If you are thinking about coming please sign up so we can prepare accordingly.

In the next couple of days I will post a link to the pod cast of Jeff's presentation.  Thank you for being there and making the night such an incredible event.

The Power of Collaboration

He could have done it by himself...after all He was God.  When Christ began his ministry he found others to do it with him.  There was and is a lesson in this for us all.  It's bigger than us, its not about whether or not we can do it but rather there is something special about sharing the journey with others.  Simply...collaboration made the journey better for those who followed Christ.  Some random thoughts...

  1. They learned some things about themselves when working with others.
  2. Success is better and tragedy not as great when connected with others.
  3. Other people make us better!
  4. Individually we really don't have all the answers.
  5. God uses us to help others while at the same time helping us.
  6. There is freedom in fellowship.
  7. The burden isn't as heavy when others are with you.
  8. We are created uniquely, yet after the same image...it is beautiful!
  9. God loves our unity.
  10. Love is something to be shared, given and received...it can't be done alone.

Consider who Christ called..who answered...who helped...who banded together.  By no means was it a pretty story.  It was one of disagreement, abandonment and at times pettiness.  Christ continued to draw them to the bigger picture...that there is more.  It was there that they found their calling.  An opportunity to take off the masks and follow their hearts.  It was collaborative, it was bigger than each of them, it was about the journey.

This is the opportunity we have in ministry.  It won't be perfect but our hope is you will hear from others as they journey...about their walk, experiences, victories and challenges.  Our hope is that we will benefit from transparency in our pursuit to be free and set others free.  Freedom being to be all who God created us to be.  We invite you to share this journey with us.  There is power when we collaborate together in our journey.

Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: - (Philippians 2:2-5)

Establish Context

Have you ever been misquoted?  Where someone picked up one thing of what you said and spoke it as a truth.  Politicians do a really good job of this with their opponents.  A statement not surrounded by the place, time, audience and overall discusison can lead one to misinterpret the comment.

Most often it is done when someone uses one statement for a specfic situation as a definition for a broader definition.  I think my kids do to this to me every now and then when they take a one time pass on something and turn it into a lifetime exception or pardon.

Why is this important?  Some have used a verse to defend a preference while others have used it start a movement. Regardless of intention it is important to understand the context of the verse or for that matter the context of a book in the Bible.  I can think of many Old Testament works that we no longer perform today as believers as a result of the cross.

The Rule...Establish Context: Before you can determine what a verse means, it is important to establish context.

  • Who is the passage written to?
  • What is the subject matter?
  • Where does this verse, passage, chapter and book fit into the Bible?
  • Is there a pattern?
  • Compare spiritual to spiritual - I Corinthians 2:13
  • Don't twist scripture or make it fit - II Peter 3:15 - 16

Bottom line as you study the bible and come across a passage that prompts questions stop and consider the context.

September Journey

Journeyseptember_3Summer is coming to end and with it a chance to catch our breath.  Our once a month men's gathering called the Journey is back in full swing at Grace Church.  It's a chance for us to reconnect and focus on our journey.

Over the next several months we are going to focus on Bible Study essentials and our walk with God. September 8th Dr. Jeff Adams will join us.  Jeff lived on the mission field for many years, has written several books and is the Senior Pastor of the church who sent Pastor Howey out to start Grace Church.  Jeff will join us to share his thoughts and experience for what will no doubt be a special time. Be sure to save this date.

Following the September Journey session Pastor Howey will kick off a four week Saturday morning men's series on the Bible and it's relevance to our everyday life starting September 13th from 7:00 - 8:15 in the morning.  Pastor Howey will use this time to share key aspects of Bible study and how to put them in practice.

The next year offers many possibilities for us.  As men we have the opportunity to offer hope and strength in the lives of others...in our own circle, our community and the world.  Our hope is that through our training times for men and opportunities to connect in groups that we can use our collective strength to stand together to accomplish all that God would bring across our path.

Misunderstood

"Even Jesus endured assault—not the open accusation that he had a wicked heart, but the more subtle kind, the seemingly “innocent” Arrows that come through “misunderstanding.”

After this, Jesus went around in Galilee, purposely staying away from Judea because the Jews there were waiting to take his life. But when the Jewish Feast of Tabernacles was near, Jesus’ brothers said to him, “You ought to leave here and go to Judea, so that your disciples may see the miracles you do. No one who wants to become a public figure acts in secret. Since you are doing these things, show yourself to the world.” For even his own brothers did not believe in him. (John 7:1–5)

I think we can relate to that. Did your family believe in you? Or did they believe in the person they wanted you to be? Did they even notice your heart at all? Have they been thrilled in your choices, or has their disappointment made it clear that you just aren’t what you’re supposed to be? At another point in his ministry, Jesus’ family shows up to collect him. “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to see you” (Luke 8:19). They think he’s lost it, and they’ve come to bring him home, poor man. Misunderstanding is damaging, more insidious because we don’t identify it as an attack on the heart. How subtly it comes, sowing doubt and discouragement where there should have been validation and support. There must be something wrong with us."

The Dare to Be

I think we can all question the value of television but from time to time it captures events that just speak to our heart.  Most recently we've seen that the performance of Michael Phelps.  The story was more than the 8 gold medals as we came to know this man who has sought to dare the impossible.

In our ministry we've used the term, "be all who God created you to be".  It's a mission and vision of sorts.  This world has a way of taking the very essence of our creation away if we allow it.  That leads me to this video clip.  Likely you have seen it or heard of it.  It is one of those special TV moments.  Listen as Paul talks about his dreams, fears and desire to be all who God created him to be.

Version 3.0 Completed

It took a little while but version 3.0 is completed.  A lot simplier and really scoped to our men's ministry.  It is a branch of sorts from our ministry page.  A way for us to inform, connect and speak to the topics we are focused on.
